How long, my Beloved?
Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?
How long must I bear this pain in my soul, and live with sorrow all the day?
How long will fear rule my life?

Notice my heart and answer me, O my Beloved;
enlighten me, lest I walk as one dead to life;
Lest my ego fears say, “We have won the day”; Lest they rejoice in their strength.
As I trust in your steadfast Love; my heart will rejoice, for in you is freedom.

Psalm 13

Reflection:

The psalmist is at the end of her own coping. The lavender shower steamer’s calming scent isn’t enough. The deep breathing exorcises are not possible in this kind of pain. She doesn’t know what else to do but rail against God. She lashes out with angry questions like a wounded animal. 

The anger only takes her to a different tactic of pleading with God. She lets God know what is at stake, her life. She reminds God of their steadfast loving relationship and implies that if the enemies win it will mean that God has lost. And maybe in saying this out loud she remembers their steadfast loving relationship too. This is where the shift happens. 

In the final verse, “Life is broken loose in doxology.” (Brueggemann). The psalmist’s life is reoriented. It does’t appear as though the circumstances have changed, but that perhaps the psalmist has changed, and perhaps not. Maybe we can hold grief and pain, and hope and joy, together.

This is a picture I took at the Psalm retreat in Montreat in October 2023. I thought it was interesting from this angle that the blue sky is only visible when it is reflected in the water.

I began writing Psalm reflections during Lent of 2020 shortly after we decided to close the church building, work from home, and worship via zoom.  It is a practice I have continued since.  Many churches use the Revised Common Lectionary (RLC) that rotates scripture on a three-year cycle (A, B, and C).  Starting in Advent 2019, Third Church decided to worship with the texts from Year D, which is still not circulated as are years A, B, and C.  Year D was created with the goal of including scriptures that were left out or not used as frequently as others.  While we were using Psalms in year D, most other lectionary followers were using Year A.  In Advent of 2020 we rejoined those who use the lectionary in year B.  Advent of 2021 year C.  Advent of 2022 year A.
