Psalm 20 (2023-2024B)

May the Great Birther who created you in wholeness, comfort you when you call!
May the Name of Love be your protection and rise up in your heart
as a tower of strength!
May all you have given in gratitude and with open hands
be returned to you a hundredfold!
May your heart’s desires and all of Love’s plans for you be fulfilled in due season!
Let us shout for joy as Love triumphs over fear;
Let our thankful hearts sing in loud acclamation to the Beloved, who answers
our heartfelt prayers for well-being.
Now I know that Love comes to all who open their hearts,
and dwells therein offering gifts of peace and harmony.
Some may boast of wealth and personal power they will stumble and fall.
Let us boast of the One who comes in the Name of Love;
We shall rise up strong and sure.
O Beloved, You who created us, You bless us with your Love.

Psalm 20

Reflection:

I hate the war-like metaphors in Psalm 20 and the idea of praying for victory, as if there is any victory in battle. No one wins a war. There are only losers; scarred and broken. There is no security in kingdoms or presidencies, and no hope in weapons of mass destruction. I have no trust in people who oppress and kill for power. I think these passages are in our scriptures to show us that people pray for what they want, even if what they want isn’t what’s good for them. Maybe it’s a reminder to pray differently. To pray that love may increase.

I trust love. And those who come in the name of love. I trust their compassionate hearts. Because Love is the source of all creation. That source whispers in my heart when I call out for help. Healing and wholeness, strength and steadiness, are the gifts that love grows in all who open their hearts. I am grateful for the work Love has done in me. When I catch myself praying for things that I want, I remind myself to pray that my love and compassion may increase. More than anything, more than the desires of any vain thing, I want to have an open heart full of love.

May all of those who have opened their hearts to Love offer their gifts of peace and harmony. This is the love that triumphs over fear. This is the love that changes the world.

O Beloved, You who created us, You bless us with your Love.

I began writing Psalm reflections during Lent of 2020 shortly after we decided to close the church building, work from home, and worship via zoom.  It is a practice I have continued since.  Many churches use the Revised Common Lectionary (RLC) that rotates scripture on a three-year cycle (A, B, and C).  Starting in Advent 2019, Third Church decided to worship with the texts from Year D, which is still not circulated as are years A, B, and C.  Year D was created with the goal of including scriptures that were left out or not used as frequently as others.  While we were using Psalms in year D, most other lectionary followers were using Year A.  In Advent of 2020 we rejoined those who use the lectionary in year B.  Advent of 2021 year C.  Advent of 2022 year A.  Advent of 2023 year B.

I use the Vanderbilt Divinity Library’s resource for lectionary readings to make text selections.

“Psalm 20 provides an insight into one dimension of the interrelationship between war and religion. The psalm presupposes that a battle or military campaign is about to begin, though no details are provided. From a military perspective, such a battle required careful planning, well-trained troops, superior military resources (e.g. chariotry) to those of the enemy, and the courage to fight. But in Israel, something more was required before departure for battle. It was fundamental to the faith of the Hebrews that success in battle depended primarily upon God, not only upon military planning and strategy. And so before a campaign could commence, there must first be a retreat to the temple. The king, who both led the army and was the representative of God among the people, had a key role to play in the service of the sanctuary. He did not demand divine aid as a royal right; rather, he offered sacrifices to God, indicating on the one hand his unworthiness before God, and on the other hand his need of God’s assistance. The sacrifice was a royal act, but the worship of which it was a part involved the people as a whole. All joined in his acknowledgment of unworthiness and prayer for assistance; all shared in the joyful anticipation of victory.” WBC p. 187
