Reflection:
We don’t always see the fools for what they are. To us, these fools are successful. They are powerful and rich. We seek their advice on finances, business, career moves. But when we look a little deeper than the surface successes of the wealthy and powerful, what will we find? The psalmist says we see folly, the lack of lovingkindness. They have amassed their wealth by exploiting others, by stepping on the backs of those who labor for them, and devouring the oppressed. They are under the illusion that power comes from billions of dollars, how many people answer to you, and sailing into space while others sleep in the dirt. This is not power; this is not love. This is greed, ignorance, and cruelty.
God is love. There is power in love. God’s power, the power we are called to participate in, is the kind of power that heals the sick, comforts the grieving, and gives food to the hungry. Love lifts up the oppressed. Love makes sure there is abundance for everyone. Love builds the world into a place where all can thrive. Love creates more love.

I began writing Psalm reflections during Lent of 2020 shortly after we decided to close the church building, work from home, and worship via zoom. It is a practice I have continued since. Many churches use the Revised Common Lectionary (RLC) that rotates scripture on a three-year cycle (A, B, and C). Starting in Advent 2019, Third Church decided to worship with the texts from Year D, which is still not circulated as are years A, B, and C. Year D was created with the goal of including scriptures that were left out or not used as frequently as others. While we were using Psalms in year D, most other lectionary followers were using Year A. In Advent of 2020 we rejoined those who use the lectionary in year B. Advent of 2021 year C. Advent of 2022 year A. Advent of 2023 year B.
I use the Vanderbilt Divinity Library’s resource for lectionary readings to make text selections.
