Psalms for Chorus and Orchestra (The music of Dr. Michael Hammer)

The psalms are a “dialogue between creator and created; between God and God’s people.”

Dr. Michael Hammer

From Michael: The book of Psalms has been used in worship for thousands of years it captures every human emotion of which we are capable: some of which we might be proud and some of which we might be embarrassed to admit; wonder at creation and its creator the joy of living; the fear of attack from enemies; desires for vengeance; despair over what seems to be God’s slow response to our pleading; simple trust in God; all of it can be found in a book that has provided comfort and guidance for billions of people. This is only one attempt at setting some of those psalms to music with a modern choir and instruments. The text is not from any specific translation though several were consulted in its creation from the King James to many modern versions. The variety of thoughts and emotions become evident when you start from the beginning and proceed through the first handful of psalms, a variety that inspired different musical styles. But, running through it all is a profound dialogue between creator and created; between God and God’s people.

Michael participates in that great dialogue with his music and with all that he is. It is with great admiration for my former colleague that I share this Sung Word: Psalms for Chorus and Orchestra by Dr. Michael Hammer. This piece debuted for worship at Sewickley Presbyterian Church where Michael currently serves. The Sung Word begins at 32:52.
