Psalm 119:57-64

Psalm 119

You are my portion; You are the sacred Gift of Life.
Though You speak to the ears of every heart, yet not every heart will hear You.
O friends, close not the eyes of your heart to the light of Truth!
Rejoice in the glorious and sacred Giver of Life, clothe yourself with joy!
Feel your heart expand in gratitude, and learn from the earth of humility.
I will sing praises to You throughout the day, and meditate on Love during the night.
For You are Companion and Friend to all who reverence your ways.
The earth is filled with Divine Love; O, that I might know You in all things!

Reflection:

“God is my portion” is a significant way to say, “God is my home”. The word “portion” recalls the way land was divided among the tribes of Israel with each Israelite receiving a piece to make their home. (That is with the exception of the Levities, see the book of Joshua for those details). To claim God as my portion is to claim that God is my home and nothing can separate me from God’s Love. To emphasize the thoroughness of connection with God, the psalmist uses all eight synonyms for God’s “law” in these eight verses and concludes with God’s steadfast love filling all the earth. God’s Love is within all of us; our home is this Love.
