Psalm 119:97-104

Psalm 119

O, how I love your friendship! I walk with You wherever I go.
Your Love is the life-giving force of Creation,
imbue us with your living rays of peace and joy.
For, as we surrender ourselves to your living Presence,
we will be filled with the radiance of Love.
As we open our hearts to the spiritual life,
we will be filled with wisdom and freedom, ready to serve.
O, how glorious are the ways of the Spirit! How wondrous are your Works!
The path of love is sure, unhurried and filled with mystery.
How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Through your Mind I received understanding;
I no longer take pleasure in my former ways.
Nan C. Merrill Psalms for Praying

Reflection:

This section expresses love and joy for the Torah and God’s companioning presence. While the opening of her heart sometimes felt like the breaking of her heart, the psalmist now delights in this renewed relationship with the Divine. She knows the way and does not want to go back to former (lawless) ways. The phrase, “The path of love is sure, unhurried and filled with mystery.” from Nan Merrill, captures in a lovely way the slow pace of spiritual growth; filled with doubt and faith, sorrow and joy, and finally in knowing that there will be mysteries we experience that we don’t fully understand that will bring us comfort and not fear. And thank God for that.
