Blessed are you whose wrongdoings have been forgiven,

Reflection:
Walter Brueggemann asserts that sin must be confessed in order to be relinquished. We must own our wrongdoing rather than hide or ignore it. Our bodies remember; they react to the guilt they carry. It is in confession that transformation begins.
We know that God is loving and compassionate even when we sin, yet confession is difficult because we do not fully understand such love—let alone experience it apart from relationship with the divine presence. Many of us expect judgment and cruelty, because that is how we have been treated by others and how we have learned to treat ourselves.
In Songs of the Heart: Reflections on the Psalms, Joan Chittister writes, “The inability to forgive another almost certainly arises out of an inability to forgive ourselves. When we refuse to give ourselves permission to be anything but perfect—as if failure did not bring its own lessons in life—we certainly are not able to forgive anyone else.”
When I cannot forgive myself, I struggle to believe that others—including God—can forgive me. Sometimes, in asking for forgiveness, I am really seeking permission to stop punishing myself. I am often harder on myself than I would ever be on another. I have to ask: If someone else were seeking forgiveness, would I give it? The answer is always yes.
So I must learn to treat myself as I would treat others—with mercy and love. I no longer expect perfection from those around me; I must grant myself the same grace. I am allowed to be imperfect. Failure carries its own lessons. Love does not withdraw in the presence of weakness.
Blessed are those who see themselves clearly, who own their faults and allow God to transform them with love, for they will know healing and wholeness.
Blessed are those who forgive their own imperfection, whose shame no longer binds them.
Blessed am I, in whom Love dwells—the love of God, the love of others, and the love of self. May my spirit radiate the sacred truth of Love.

I began writing Psalm reflections during Lent of 2020. Shortly after, we decided to close the church building, work from home, and worship via zoom. Many churches use the Revised Common Lectionary (RLC) that rotates scripture on a three-year cycle (A, B, and C). Starting in Advent 2019, the church decided to worship with the texts from Year D, which is still not circulated as are years A, B, and C. Year D was created with the goal of including scriptures that were left out or not used as frequently as others. While we were using Psalms in year D, most other lectionary followers were using Year A. In Advent of 2020 we rejoined those who use the lectionary in year B. Advent of 2021 year C. When we returned to in person worship, we took the psalm reflections out of the order of worship. I continued to write them for the blog. Advent of 2022 year A. I left church work in July of 2023 but continued the practice of writing psalm reflections. Advent of 2023 year B. Advent of 2024 year C. I finished year C early, so I began work on psalms I missed: Psalm 119, Year D and others not in the lectionary. By the end of 2025, I have written a reflection for each psalm.

“Psalm 32 is the second of the seven traditional penitential psalms (see Psalms 6; 38; 51; 130; 143). It is not itself a penitential prayer in which confession of sin is made. It is instead a psalm in which the practice of penitence is taught as a lesson. …. It is the action of trust that God is a God who keeps covenant (v10b). It is language about God as well as self. “This psalm is a piece of very good psychology about the burdens we carry within us, our unforgiven sins. When we don’t face our faults, our problems, our weakness, our angers, our sense of inadequacy–worse, when we blame them on others, or deny them, or to be perfect, or become defensive–we refuse to accept ourselves. Every doctor and psychologist in the country sees the effect of act in their offices every day. We all have things we need to forgive in ourselves of face in ourselves. We have things we know we ought to ask forgiveness for from someone else, but pride and stubbornness hold us back. These things become a barrier between us and the community, a hot stone in the pit of the stomach, a block to real happiness. And nothing is going to get better until we face them. Forgiveness occurs when we don’t need to hold a grudge anymore: when we are strong enough to be independent of whatever, whoever it was that so ruthlessly uncovered the need in us. Forgiveness is not the problem; it’s living till it comes that taxes all the strength we have. Some people think that forgiveness is incomplete until things are just as they were before. But the truth is that after great hurt, things are never what they were before: they can only be better or nothing at all.
