Praying for leaders is sometimes difficult. If I’m honest, when I’m praying for leadership it’s mostly because of a decision I want them to make on my behalf (or when I’m less self-centered, on behalf of their constituents). I rarely think about joining the prayer of the leader with my own prayer. Perhaps that’s my judgmental side having a hard time believing that all of our leaders who claim to pray actually do.
I love the vision of Psalm 20, that of a servant king who realizes that battle plans and military preparation are not what will save them. The king is not the savior of the people but is one among those saved by God. The people join this humble but confident prayer because their destiny is bound up with their king’s. And, the praying king is a leader who realizes that there is more at stake than his own pride if he is not victorious. This psalm is a liturgical prayer for people who understand that their lives are bound together so they pray together. They know, hope, and believe that God will hear each of their prayers. Verse one reminds me to be loyal to God and to my neighbors. “I pray that the Lord will listen when you are in trouble, and that the God of Jacob will keep you safe.” CEV
Our lives are bound up together, so let us pray for one another.

Breath Prayer: I am including breath prayers because this is the practice that I engage in most often. Sometimes, I simply manage my breathing as I would when I was singing as a warmup and strengthening exercise. This practice helps me to feel centered, strong, and connected with myself and the divine. Sometimes, I add words or intentions for the inhalation and exhalation.

Mr. Roger’s “Taking a breath” This one is short, but Mr. Roger’s voice is calming for me (and many Pittsburghers) and even his virtual presence can summon childhood memories of calmness and safety.
Let us pray:
One way to think about breath prayer is that whatever is exhaled other people will inhale. So, sometimes we might inhale and exhale the same idea with the hope that what we receive from God, we can share with others. For example, you may imagine receiving God’s steadfast love while praying that others are receiving God’s steadfast love.
Another way to think about breath prayer is to pick something you would like to receive for your inhalation and something you would like to release for your exhalation. The idea is to keep it simple, so I encourage you to simply find one word for each inhale and one word for each exhale. That simple prayer could be something like this: God fill me with your Holy spirit. I receive your faithfulness and release my disloyalty.
Or you may want to use a short phrase: I pray that the Lord will listen when you are in trouble, and that the God of Jacob will keep you safe.
Ok, everyone take a deep breath. Breath in. Breath out. Breath in. Breath out. Repeat as needed.

“Psalm 20 provides an insight into one dimension of the interrelationship between war and religion. The psalm presupposes that a battle or military campaign is about to begin, though no details are provided. From a military perspective, such a battle required careful planning, well-trained troops, superior military resources (e.g. chariotry) to those of the enemy, and the courage to fight. But in Israel, something more was required before departure for battle. It was fundamental to the faith of the Hebrews that success in battle depended primarily upon God, not only upon military planning and strategy. And so before a campaign could commence, there must first be a retreat to the temple. The king, who both led the army and was the representative of God among the people, had a key role to play in the service of the sanctuary. He did not demand divine aid as a royal right; rather, he offered sacrifices to God, indicating on the one hand his unworthiness before God, and on the other hand his need of God’s assistance. The sacrifice was a royal act, but the worship of which it was a part involved the people as a whole. I began writing Psalm reflections during Lent of 2020 shortly after we decided to close the church building, work from home, and worship via zoom. Many churches use the revised common lectionary that rotates scripture on a three-year cycle (A, B, and C). Starting in Advent 2019, Third Church decided to worship with the texts from Year D, which is still not circulated as are years A, B, and C. Year D was created with the goal of including scriptures that were left out or not used as frequently as others. Reflections exploring the Psalms in year D. While we were using Year D, most other lectionary followers were using Year A. Now that we are rejoining those who use the lectionary, we are on Year B. This we hope will keep all of us planning and preparing worship on the same page.
