The Women’s lectionary Review

A Very Good Place to Start

The Women’s Lectionary is a great entry level commentary for lay leaders or for pastors who are new to reading the bible with a feminist lens.  This commentary is like the Interpreters Bible Commentary in its accessibility for lay leaders but offers a feminist perspective, emphasis on women in the bible, and feminine images of God.  Wilcox’s “notes of care and caution” are short essays on themes found throughout the commentary: Gender, Relationship with Judaism, Patriarchy, and Violence against Women.  New and experienced preachers will appreciate having a suggested lectionary for the year as well as a list of possible sermon series or bible studies that can be derived from this one book.  The index of lectionary passages allows those following the RCL to glean from this resource as well.  Those who have spent more time with feminist theology will want to check out the footnotes for resources for further study.  Wilcox has met her goal to give everyone and anyone who wants to preach about women an accessible resource.
