Psalms Year A

My practice of reading and reflecting on the Psalms ebbs and flows. I’ve had some renewed energy around this work in the past year (2024) and even picked up some unfinished work from previous years. Year A started in Advent of 2022 (November/December) at a time when I was not terribly inspired to write. I tried to motivate myself to do at least the palms that I hadn’t already covered in previous years while trying to stay on top of Year B (2023-2024). I finished Psalm 43 just before advent of 2024 that would start the Year C cycle. It’s confusing. I have a chart…. actually, charts. For now, I’m marking Year A as complete, at least until advent of 2025.

My hope is that while I’m working on Year C, I can finish up what I missed in year B. I have drafts for those psalms started. After that, I might go back and pick up some psalms in year D that aren’t found in the other lectionaries. I guess the goal is to write about each of the 150 psalms at least once, but I’m still not certain to what end.

I enjoy the practice of reading and writing psalms and the lectionary gives me a way to keep on a schedule. Through writing these psalm posts I can see spiritual growth or at least changes or nuances happening within me. What started as a “maybe we can do a lenten study on the psalms” became “create psalms content for the congregation during the pandemic” when most of my job was nearly impossible to do. And now, writing psalms reflections has become a personal spiritual practice that I post in a public place. Life is weird.

I began writing Psalm reflections during Lent of 2020 shortly after we decided to close the church building, work from home, and worship via zoom.  It is a practice I have continued since.  Many churches use the Revised Common Lectionary (RLC) that rotates scripture on a three-year cycle (A, B, and C).  Starting in Advent 2019, Third Church decided to worship with the texts from Year D, which is still not circulated as are years A, B, and C.  Year D was created with the goal of including scriptures that were left out or not used as frequently as others.  While we were using Psalms in year D, most other lectionary followers were using Year A.  In Advent of 2020 we rejoined those who use the lectionary in year B.  Advent of 2021 year C.  Advent of 2022 year A.
