I’m preparing for Year B. This lectionary year officially starts with the first Sunday of Advent which is November 29th this year. It seems a little too early to start in September, and truthfully, I’m not ready to start.
I debated about using an alternative lectionary this year. The three year revised common lectionary (RCL) doesn’t cover all of the psalms, it doesn’t cover all of scripture either. I did a quick internet search for how many psalms aren’t mentioned in the RCL… 47!!! I didn’t trust the AI, mostly because I didn’t like the result, so I did a not-so-quick chart of my own and sure enough 47 psalms are entirely unused. I didn’t get into which verses go unused. Typically, when a Psalm is included it’s not in its entirety.
Year D was started as a way to include the many scriptures (not just psalms) that are not included in the RCL. And it does cover 43 of the psalms not covered in the RCL. It shouldn’t be a surprise that these texts are not included because they are more difficult to deal with. The difficulty comes because the Year D texts often take more time to research and develop a reflection. So in an effort to have two blog posts a week… I’m considering using Year B and Year D at the same time. Maybe…
I’m also considering going down to one post a week for psalms and doing something completely different for additional posts… so I’m open to suggestions for that. So write some comments or send me emails. I would love to hear from you.
