Cuba Project up-date

“Sew” much has happened since the last Cuba Project up-date! We have hosted events with Pitt Serves (University of Pittsburgh Volunteer Opportunities for Students, faculty, staff, and alumni), Girl Scouts, other DfG teams, and our usual crew of volunteers from the community, local campuses, and the corrections center. Which means, we had tons of kits ready for this shipment!

Our team has hosted two student interns this semester and we plan to have both of them continue to volunteer this summer. We are planning on additional student interns in the fall semester. Having these dedicated volunteers is amazing and all of our student interns have added their own touches to productivity and our joy. One of those talented young people, Rachel, will be taking over the emails, the quality check in process, and financial accounting so that I can take a 12 week sabbatical. I am thrilled to hand over the leadership role to such a talented person.

Recently, we loaded a Global Links truck full of the kits we have completed so far. Our plan is to have another large order ready to go shortly after I return from my sabbatical in July. There is still time to help us with the Cuba project.

Here are the details for supporting the Pittsburgh Collection Point.

Days for Girls Teams:  Thank you to everyone who has been sending components year-round! We are happy to receive any components you are able to send. Our most needed component is sewn carry pouches, heavy flow shields, and heavy flow liners. If you choose to send care and use cards, send them in Spanish. Days for Girls International website has a spot where you can get the latest up-dates and needs from each collection point. Check it out here.

If you want to volunteer with the Pittsburgh Chapter, here is the information for volunteering:

  • Bring your own lunch and water bottle.
  • Drop in on Wednesdays 10am to 2pm (other times by appointment)
  • Contact Pittsburgh@daysforgirls.org for more information

Most needed items: Women’s sizes small and medium underwear.  You can find them on our amazon wish list

Wish list items can be shipped directly to Third Church

You may make a monetary donation to The Pittsburgh Chapter or to Days for Girls International

This is Rachel, our University of Pittsburgh Student Intern! Here is is holding up some fabric scraps that she used to learn how to serge circles and identify serving issues so that she better understands the quality checking process.
This is Barbaros one of the Third Church sextons who is always happy to help out with DfG. And thank you to Susan the Third Church admin assistant who helps out with directing volunteers to our room, making a million copies for us, and taking pictures. It seems that the person taking the pictures never ends up in one of them.
On the left is Patrick, one the Third Church sextons, he’s a little camera shy, but cares very much about DfG and making sure the kits get to those who need them. One the right is Robin, the Global Links staff person who drives their truck to pick up medical surplus from local hospitals (and menstrual kits from us). He’s wonderful and tremendously helpful. I don’t think he stood still the entire time he was in our parking lot.
In the back row is Jim (a man who knows), and from left to right, Bennett, Rachel, Pat, Carrie, and Nita. This is about 3/4 of our regular Wednesday crew. Some of our regular morning crew had already left and our late shift had not arrived yet. Not pictured from the Pittsburgh team: Karen, Lynne, Constance, and Claire. Also not pictured is Liz from the Oakdale PA team who was there earlier in the day and has been vital to connecting our teams. We also need to thank Lisa and her Pittsburgh North team and Ruth and the Grove City team. These close knit teams made a day like this possible. We are also thankful for all of the DfG teams and other donors who contributed components to us this year.
Nita, Carrie, Karie (me), Rachel, Bennett, Pat, and Jim.
