Grove City Days for Girls Team October 2026

Days for Girls works to eliminate the stigma and limitations associated with menstruation so that women and girls have improved health, education and livelihoods. To date, we have reached over 4 million women and girls with our life-changing menstrual health solutions.

Each standard Days for Girls washable kit includes: 2 waterproof shields, 8 liners, 2 panties, 1 carry pouch, a 100% cotton wash cloth, a small bar of soap, and an ovulation chart and directions, all packaged in a drawstring bag. Those are the things you can see. What you might not notice immediately is that those kits also contain: dignity, education, and independence.  These kits and their accompanying education can lift entire communities out of poverty.

To complete menstrual health kits we fundraise to purchase supplies.  You can send us monetary donations through: Grove City PA Team’s team fundraising page for Days for Girls International as well as sending needed items directly to us through our Grove City DfG Amazon wish list.

The other way to help us is to follow us on social media and share our posts: Days for Girls Grove City PA Team

We received a donation of shields for our Mercery County Food Bank project that needed to be checked for quality. Fueled by chocolate, Carole D’s cookies, and Carole F.’s zucchini blueberry bread, our team made sure that our kit recipients receive a beautiful d long-lasting DfG kit. Our team members with collection point experience created an assembly line type checking system. Each person checks for a couple of key standards so as to not get overwhelmed by the entire list. We put our most experienced checkers at the end of the line so they could review all aspects. They also took care of the “not sure” bin (Christine in the middle picture moved to a separate table to do just that). This bin was created so that the work flow didn’t have to stop for questions that fell outside of our training. Mostly, the team enjoyed sitting all together at one long table. A few team members focused on serging and folding liners to keep our steady progress going. Every part of the process is important for ensuring quality kits and we are “sew” grateful for all our volunteers.

Over the month of October, some volunteers continued work on the shield project while others worked to get kits ready for distributions. Our project with the Mercer County Food Bank (see that section later or details) continues and we distributed kits and cups at the drive through food distribution at the Haven which is run by Bethany Church. Keep scrolling for those pictures too.

We have birthday cake at our Monday workshops for anyone celebrating that month. That cake helped us celebrate Days for Girls International reaching the 4,000,000 kit distribution milestone today as well! Holding up 4 fingers to mark that event are the volunteers who were with us at lunchtime today.

We’re so grateful to Oak Grove Church for including a stop at our fabric wholesaler on their return trip from their mission journeys to Unto! They’ll make a side trip to pick up our order of several hundred yards of fabric, saving us the shipping cost. That savings allows us to reach more girls and women, so they can go to school and work any day of the month. Thanks to Cindy for coordinating those efforts!

Many thanks to The Haven at Bethany Church in Mercer for giving us the opportunity to distribute our DfG washable pad kits (made by our volunteers) and menstrual cups. We love parenting with other organizations to provide for our neighbors.

Partnership with the Mercer County Food Bank for the 2026-2027 School Year

The Mercer County Food Bank and Grove City Days for Girls are partnering this year to make DfG kits available at every student food pantry in the county.  We hope, with your help, we can supply them with kits and cups.

Grove City DfG team representatives, Christine Opitz and Ruth Magee met with Bailey Shepherd, Strategic Partnerships and Programs Manager at the Mercer County Food Bank, to see how we can better support Mercer County Schools.  Baily reported that are 10,000 students in our county’s school districts and 7000 of them accessed a student food pantry last year. These students will also benefit from having access to sustainable menstrual products and education, especially since far more girls than boys access their school’s pantries.

Before the start of each school year, Bailey meets with the school district representatives who coordinate their school’s pantry. At this year’s meeting, district representatives saw a video about our kits.  In turn, at the beginning of the school year, each district must provide the student body with education about the school food pantry and students take a tour of their school’s pantry. Students will view the DfG video at the same time they learn more about the food pantry at their school.

The Food Bank is asking for 4,000 kits over the course of the coming school year. The first shipment of 1,200 kits and 300 cups was distributed on August 20th. We will supply more kits to replenish the supply every 6-8 weeks.

Each washable kit we supply to the schools will include: 2 waterproof shields, 8 liners, 1 carry pouch, a 100% cotton wash cloth, a small bar of soap, and a period-tracking chart and directions, all packaged in a drawstring bag. Each menstrual cup kit will include: 2 menstrual cups, a period-tracking chart, directions, and small drawstring pouch.  Those are the things you can see. What you might not notice immediately is that those kits also contain: dignity, education, and independence.  These kits and their accompanying education can lift entire communities out of poverty.

To complete the needed menstrual health kits, we will be fundraising to purchase supplies.

Contact Ruth at grovecitypa@daysforgirls.org about volunteer opportunities or the best way to make a donation. The August order was filled but more kits will be needed throughout the school year.

We want to give a big thank you to the “big team”: Oakdale PA, Pittsburgh PA, Pittsburgh North PA, and Pittsburgh South PA and our community partners, individual donors, and volunteers that are making this possible. Because of generous donors like you, we had the donations we needed to complete the August order.

Collection Point Closes and Volunteers join other sewing teams (February 2026) This post includes the history of the PA Collection Point. The Pittsburgh PA DfG team began in 2015 and expanded to become the PA Collection Point in 2018. In 2022, the Collection Point and Pittsburgh team had to find a new building which led to them separating in 2023, at which time the PA Collection Point moved to Grove City while the sewing team stayed in Pittsburgh.
